A Closer Look: Oakley Icon Pack 3.0

A few weeks back I said a little bit about the Oakley Icon Pack 3.0, and how after only a few outings, I was completely smitten. I like it so much, it's getting a whole post dedicated to it.

The Oakley Icon Pack 3.0 is a large (52.4 Liters) backpack built to handle anything. It's spacious enough to satisfy your inner pack-rat, and, although I haven't tried it, seems it could even carry enough for some short multi-day hikes. That said, it is not so large that it can't be used around town, or on campus. It's built with durability in mind, but has many features that make schlepping your more fragile items a breeze. For example, purpose made, heavily padded compartments for your laptop, phone, iPod or most any other gizmo. Mesh pockets ordain the outside of the pack, making for quick access to clothing, water-bottles etc.
Oakley is most well-known for their eyewear, so the purpose made compartments come as no surprise. With a slew of straps, buckles and zippers to help keep even the most obscure pieces of cargo secure, there is no doubt that this pack is built for meeting your every need.

The main compartment is massive, here beautifully filled with everything that was strewn on my bedroom floor, plus Mom's laptop.

A padded sleeve keeps your laptop safe. A secondary side zipper also makes for super quick access.

The secondary compartment boasts a unique double-flap, velcro design. Inside are padded compartments for your electronics, as well as slots for writing implements.

I soon discovered this outer compartment was also the perfect size for a helmet. On Friday you can take it to school, and Saturday to the cyclocross race. Genius.

A convenient mesh sleeve to quickly stash your eyewear.

Two large zippered side pockets can be found on either side of the pack, making for even more storage space if needed.

Near the top of the pack, a soft pouch and headphone port for your media player.

On the left front should strap, a mesh pocket for you phone. No more frantic rooting around when the phone rings!

Adjustable shoulder, hip and chest straps keep even the heaviest loads secure and comfortable, whether hiking or flying down the trail.

A unique feature of the pack is it's highly adjustable chest strap. "Rails" allow the strap to be slid up and down to fit different body types.

Yet more storage space with this large external mesh "trough," perfect for water bottles or... Chamois Butt'r?

Lastly, the thing just looks plain sick... but it's from Oakley, so what did you expect?

I could not be happier with this pack, and look forward to using it as often as I get a chance. With its versatility, I bet that ends up being pretty often.
